Fight Club

I know you're not supposed to talk about it (last time I make that joke, I promise), but please use the comments box below to draw out previous or new conversation threads about Fight Club, and most of all to workshop the ideas you're developing for your essays.

In class we discussed the idea of self inflicting pain for the sake of pain.

What about self inflicting pain for the sake of having pain to *overcome*? Could it be that the reason that people want to have pain is not for the pain itself, but, rather, for the feeling of strength and pride that comes from being able to overcome it?

Did the men in fight club gain character by overcoming the pain of fights? Does overcoming pain correspond with taking control of your own life?

On the topic of hitting rock bottom, when *Jack* has the gun in his hand and is talking with Tyler, has *Jack* hit rock bottom in the end of the book and/ or the movie? Or, has he started to climb again?
